Geezers edge the young’uns in Mixed Doubles

EPC tournament director Mick Pearce (white hat and shorts) details the rules for a double-elimination tournament before play starts.

It all came down to one last rally Saturday at the EPC Mixed Doubles Tournament. Top-seeded pair Larry Flowers and Linda Strauss squeaked past Rae Boyce and Giuliano Hofling to take top honors in Group 1. Over in Group 2, the result also came down to a tie-breaking game (to 15, rally scoring, win by one). Taryn Young and Grant Kalbfleisch earned the crown in that group.

Sixteen male/female teams took to the Marshdale courts under blue skies and wind-free conditions. Competition was spirited but good-natured, even though half the entrants were married couples. They were an example to us all. Scorekeeping duties were performed by Sarah German and Pat Theno, who had a lot to keep track of.

Sisters & Company generously sponsored the tournament. Originally set to sponsor the canceled Women’s Doubles tourney, Sisters awarded prizes to the winning female contestants Saturday. Sisters & Company is a boutique in downtown Evergreen that is the source of stylish, unique and affordable pieces for the wardrobe or home.

An exceptionally delicious and appealing display of food was once again provided by EPC board member Kathy Kincannon in the pavilion.

Sales were brisk in the gear tent manned by EPC board member Jim Mosby, left.

Apologies are in order for this photo of EPC President Bob Kerr with third-place finisher Noelle Jackson and Mick Pearce. Maybe the gremlins were exacting revenge for Bob stepping in for Noelle's injured original partner, Morgan Cunningham—but he didn't even get the prize money. Maybe Bob really doesn't have a good side.
