Where and when to play this week

The opening date of the newly improved courts at Marshdale is imminent but not yet certain. The Wulf indoor schedule changes for fall tomorrow. Pickleball hours at Evergreen Middle and Marshdale Elementary will be modified beginning Thursday with the start of the school year. Otherwise, carry on as usual.

“We are getting close to completion at the Marshdale courts, hopefully reopening soon, depending on the weather,” Jeff Sweet, EPRD recreation supervisor-Athletics, said Thursday. Most obviously to the casual observer today, nets have yet to be installed.

The new gym schedule for Wulf takes effect tomorrow, Monday, Aug. 12. It will be posted on the Schedules page of the EPRD website in the Upcoming and Holiday Schedules section by tomorrow, but you can see it below now. Friday was the last day of summer camp, so the weekday drop-in times will go back to four courts instead of two. There are a few no-school dates that will be limited to two courts—Aug 23, 26 and Oct 17, 18.

At EMS and MES, starting Thursday courts may be used only on weekdays after 4 p.m. and all day on weekends. There will be no morning play on weekdays at either school.

Jeff announced several new pickleball options for this fall:

Evergreen players hit the courts in Carbondale

Thirty-four EPC players and spouses camped out or lodged in the town of Redstone for a few days last week. They played pickleball at the Young-Calaway Alpine Bank courts in Carbondale, ate a lot and saw the sights, hiked, biked and fished. The courts were built on Town of Carbondale land and constructed with funds provided by the Roaring Fork Pickleball Association. Organized by EPCers June and Bruce Flinn, the Evergreen group was welcomed onto the busy complex of six dedicated pickleball courts and four more courts set up on the adjacent tennis courts.

Evergreen players enjoy the shades provided by tarps strung between the pickleball and tennis courts. From left, Don Marshall, Doug (a fine Carbondale player), Tom Ingwalson, Peter Mathis, Maureen Gelhausen, Jerry Beth Owen and Gary Owen.

Mount Sopris looms in the background of the Carbondale courts.

The Redstone Cliffs Lodge on the bank of the Crystal River was the site of some high-stakes games involving quarters and dice. Tom Ingwalson at front right was enjoying his intake of healthy greens.
