Happy Hour Friday in Genesee

Did you hear the one about three women who walk into a bar? They planned an Evergreen pickleball summer happy hour, which will take place Friday, June 21, at Genesee Pub & BBQ. The restaurant features a large patio, good food and a full bar. The Concrete Feedback band, described as a “Colorado psychedelic folk rock band,” will play at 6 p.m.

Jeri Herskovits, Linda Jacobsen and Jerry Beth Owen cooked up the idea while debriefing after the Round Robin tournament planning session, since the summer happy hours at Marshdale put together by Julie Flint are on hiatus for obvious reasons. The shared food and drinks at those gatherings are always fabulous, but this time there is no need to bring your own.

Lean week at Wulf

While local outdoor courts get all the action that current temperatures allow, opportunities at Wulf are rather sparse this week. In addition to the reduced schedule noted here, the gym will be in use for a basketball tournament Friday, June 21, meaning no pickleball play at Wulf that day.

Very late-breaking info indicates there actually will be pickleball play available Friday after 11. a.m. May be best to call the Wulf desk at 720-880-1200, actually go to the gym at the appointed hour or consult a soothsayer.

Thanks to Nancy Hamilton for providing this schedule by way of Sue at the Wulf front desk. The full gym schedule is available here.

By the way, Nancy has added daily calendar events for Marshdale Elementary to TeamReach so people can mark which days they plan to play. To join the Evergreen CO Pickleball TeamReach group, use the code Pball80439.

Technology! Wow, Nancy, thank you. Now we can tell not only if anyone will be playing when we want to, but who they are. That knowledge should be used only for good.

Sandy Mathis is pretty darn happy about the availability of pickleball courts at EMS. Thanks to Don Marshall for the photo.

Play times

Evergreen Park and Rec, with help from EPC, has provided two sets of alternative courts for pickleballers during renovations at Marshdale.

Right next to the under-construction courts at Marshdale Park is Marshdale Elementary School, which now features three temporary pickleball courts. The lines were taped by volunteers recruited by EPC President Bob Kerr, who worked with EPRD to provide another place to play. EPRD has provided temporary nets that are kept onsite.

At Evergreen Middle School, old tennis courts that were upgraded by EPC volunteers for use the last couple summers have been greatly improved by EPRD with a lot of input/encouragement from Bob K and help from more EPC volunteers.

Three courts (a fourth court has a net but the surface was too degraded to paint and line) have been repainted and striped, with permanent nets moved from Marshdale. EPRD also installed a chain-link fence that divides the four courts in two.

“Both facilities are open daily for drop-in play from dawn to dusk until school starts again in August,” said EPRD athletics supervisor Jeff Sweet. “We are not scheduling times/levels or taking reservations at either location. Balls are not provided at outdoor courts.”

Jeff added, “At Evergreen MS the nets will stay up. At Marshdale ES the nets will stored next to the steps by the gym entrance. Nets must be broken down and put away when your group is done playing.” There is a storage box for the nets.

“The courts at Marshdale ES are in a mixed use area with a playground and basketball court,” Jeff said. “Be prepared to share the space and cooperatively interact with other community members.”

A projected finish date for the eight new Marshdale courts is not yet available.

There are three temporary pickleball courts on the north side of Marshdale Elementary, which means the side away from North Turkey Creek Road in case Jim Stafford is still wondering where they are. Gary Owen kindly and skillfully responded to a request for photos today.

Pickleball parade promotes EPC

For the third year, “Grandad’s” Chevy promoted local pickleball at the Evergreen Rodeo Parade. EPC-er Mike Morris drives the car, a 1960 Chevy Biscayne that has been in the family since his grandfather bought it that year. “It was the cheapest car Chevy sold in 1960,” Mike said. “It has 47,000 miles on it.”

Ten EPC supporters whacked or maybe tapped pickleballs amongst themsevles while following Mike’s car in the downtown Evergreen parade on June 15.

“The crowd seemed to like us and hollered ‘Yay, pickleball’ frequently,” Mike said. “Maybe it was the candy! I usually honked the horn when they yelled about us. My congratulations to those who hit pickleballs back and forth: Only one ball was lost in Bear Creek!”
