Club members will gather for holiday fun tomorrow

Jeri Herskovitz, EChO Director of Development Monica Carruth accepts the 2023 EPC donation from Jeri Herskovits, left, and Cherie Peterson.

It’s time for the EPC Holiday Gala and Benefit, with the annual event set to fill the party space at The Wild Game in Bergen Park tomorrow from 5 to 9 p.m.

Ticket-holders will enjoy food catered by Genesee Pub & Barbecue, along with a prize raffle, silent auction, a cupcake contest and, no doubt, lots of pickleball smack talk.

Party-goers are requested to bring cash if they wish to purchase raffle tickets and a check or credit card for silent auction items.

Proceeds from the Gala will benefit Evergreen Christian Outreach, which received $2,000 from EPC last year.

Manucher Salehi and his paddle holder are the center of attention at Wulf gym.

The paddle holder problem: Solved?

Most players would agree that paddle holders, or the lack of them, are problematic. One local player, with his education in electrical engineering (but a career in directing Iranian movies and commercials), set out to solve the problem.

Manucher Salehi, better known on the courts as Manu, wanted to save space and avoid the confusion of long lines of paddles on the gym floor. His ingenious solution holds 32 paddles in groups of four and has an indicator easily moved to mark the next group to play.

To make it, he purchased a coffee table on Facebook Marketplace. Asked about the response to his creation, he said, “Nobody has beaten me up yet. But seriously, the response has been very positive from almost everyone.”

Things can get very contentious in the gym, but beaten up? Almost everyone? Let’s get it together and offer thanks for a thoughtful job well done.

And, Manu. Is the patent pending?

Local tournament coming up Dec. 8

More deets have become available about the second annual pickleball tournament benefiting the Evergreen High School lacrosse club.

Organizer Emily Webre said the Polar Pickleball Palooza on Dec. 8 will provide at least eight games per team and utilize rally scoring.

“We are separating times for the two levels so we hope to have as many participants as we can get,” Emily said today. “As of now, it’s looking like the beginner group ‘Fun & Festive’ will start at 10:30 a.m. with the ‘Cutthroat & Competitive" group at 12:30 p.m. That way, we will have more courts available.”

There were 20 teams in the competitive group last year and they are hoping to have at least 30 this year.

So get out there and play pickleball for lacrosse!

Keep your eyes peeled for a Thanksgiving week schedule

The current Wulf gym schedule goes through this Sunday, Nov. 24. A new one has not been posted yet, but be aware that kids camp during the school holiday will impact pickleball hours. It’s best to check the schedule or call the helpful front desk personnel at 720-880-1200 before heading inside to Wulf.

Looks like we might need mufflers* and earmuffs to play at Marshdale next week, but you don’t want Nancy Pudwill out there by herself, do you? *Apparently, some proofreaders do not know what a muffler is unless it’s under a car.
