Go Outside and Play - If You Can Find a Court This Week

This week looks to be the first summer-like days of the season. But it will be a challenge to find a court - inside and out.

Evergreen Middle School Courts

All Marshdale courts are reserved Monday through Wednesday, 8 am to 3:30 pm, for Laura Kovanda’s clinic. All 32 spots have been filled. Unlike auditing a class, peering in from the sidelines is frowned upon.

Wulf gym is available only a few hours each day this week as EPRD’s Adventure and Basketball Camps will take over the gym 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. You can still get some play in Monday 7-9:30 am, Tuesday 12:30-2 pm, and Wednesday and Thursday 7-9:30 am. Friday has regular play times.

So, at least through Wednesday we’ll be looking for courts to play on in the area. Here are some suggestions:

Evergreen Middle School: three courts, portable nets, play starts around 9 am. Must be EPC member.

Hiwan Golf Club: three state-of-the art courts. Must be Hiwan member or guest.

Mt. Vernon Canyon Club: four new courts. Must be MVCC member or guest.

Lakewood Recreation: 14 shared (with tennis) outdoor courts across four public parks, and indoor courts at three rec centers, open play and reservations

Cornerstone Courts: six lighted courts in LIttleton (South Suburban Parks & Recreation), open play and reservations

Apex Park & Recreation: dozens of indoor and outdoor courts in Arvada, open play and reservations

EPC Brings Pickleball to the Evergreen Rodeo Parade

Mike and Karen Morris led a group of players through downtown Evergreen Saturday in their vintage Chevy Biscayne. For the second year in a row EPC members walked the parade route, dinking and volleying their way through the crowd-lined street.

EPC members Linda Jacobsen, Gary and Jerry Beth Owen, John Hach, Monte Poague, LIndy Gorscurth, Kathy Kincannon, and Karen and Mike Morris.

Bob Kerr Donates Storage Box for Nets at EMS

EMS courts continue their transformation from a dirty, overgrown cement slab to three up-to-par courts ready for play.

Latest in the upgrade is a heavy duty storage box for the three portable nets. Players take it upon themselves to set up and tear down nets whenever they play. Be sure to “roll the nets” before putting them away.

Scott Wiliams sourced materials and constructed a fence between two courts and behind the third to keep balls from getting away.

Play at EMS is open to EPC members. Players start showing up around 9 am every day as the weather allows.

If you haven’t tried “renegade pickleball,” this week is a good time to cross over to the other side.

East Courts at Marshdale Can Throw Tricky Shadows: Here’s How to Leverage Them

Avoiding play in the mornings on courts six and seven (along the east fence) because the shadows and sunlight are playing tricks on you? Stacie at The Pickler offers up “7 Tips to Conquer Tough Shadows on the Pickleball Court.”

When you learn to use shadows to your advantage, you’re like Brer Rabbit: “Please, don’t make me play in the shadow. Okay, if we must (sly grin.)”
