Flash Mob Pickleball at Marshdale, 10 am Thursday

It looks to be the first gorgeous day of Spring tomorrow, so let’s all show up at Marshdale, 10 am to open outdoor play for 2023.

Forecast calls for sunshine and 50 degrees with moderate wind. The courts are clear of snow and calling your name. See you there.

Players Ask for Emergency Sign at Marshdale; EPRD Delivers

While you’re out playing at Marshdale tomorrow check out the new sign that provides emergency responders the exact location of the courts.

Jerry Beth Owen spotted a similar sign in Arizona this winter and suggested we post one at Marshdale.

EPC board members Monte Poague, Sarah German and Linda Jacobsen took the suggestion to EPRD staff. They thought it was a smart idea, and printed and posted it before we could say, “Zero Zero Two.”

If you have an emergency at Marshdale Courts, be sure to call 911 and give the exact address and location.

How Do Altitude, Wind and Weather Affect Play?

Speaking of playing outdoors, the transition from indoor play can take awhile to adjust to wind, temperature and humidity changes. Stacie at The Pickler says “it’s important to understand how these elements affect the pickleball, your shots and overall strategy.”

If you’ve been playing in Evergreen for more than a few months you already have a good feel for playing at 7,800 ft.

  • Control your serves, returns and drives as they will have a tendency to “sail” in the thinner air; (the new balls at Wulf are conditioning us to watch out for long serves)

  • Be prepared for “power” play with lots of speed-ups and fast points. Some pickleball players want to take advantage of the thinner air and speed up play. So, be prepared for the fast game and hands battles across the kitchen.

Here’s more tips on playing in variable conditions.

Here’s another tip from Stacie: Pickleball Etiquette

“Pickleball is a ‘social’ sport.” Stacie reminds us. “This generally means that pickleball is as much about interacting and socializing with people as it is about physical activity and competition. This ‘social’ culture around pickleball is one defining characteristic of the sport itself. In connection with that unique culture, it is important to understand some ‘pickleball etiquette’ tips before hitting the pickleball court.”

Here are some we thought worth calling out:

  • Introduce yourself to new players

  • Know the rules

  • Call “Ball on Court” to safely stop play

  • Play with weaker players every so often

  • And don’t forget to tap paddles after every game
