Cast a Crucial Vote

Ballots are set to go out tomorrow, Oct. 16, for the Nov. 7 Jefferson County Coordinated Election, which gives you the opportunity to vote on an issue of utmost importance to the Evergreen pickleball community. Evergreen Park and Recreation District provides the indoor and outdoor courts we love to play on, and it is asking for continuance of a mill levy first approved in 2005. A new, improved pickleball complex at Marshdale may hang in the balance.

A voter guide compiled by the Jeffco Elections Department has already arrived in local households. It contains exact ballot language and points out that the ballot issue is not a proposed tax increase or bonded debt increase.

Bob Kerr, EPC vice president, says the club strongly supports passage of the ballot issue and pushed back against some recent negative commentary questioning the transparency or detail in EPRD’s Strategic Plan. “Those who have attended its community meetings and those that have spent a great deal of time involved in this planning know that EPRD has only the community’s interest at heart,” he said.

He acknowledges that many groups have wish lists specific to their organization, as EPC wishes for a new and improved pickleball complex at Marshdale. “But EPRD must satisfy the needs of all in the community,” Bob said. “They have done this for years, successfully, and will continue to do so with our support. I strongly suggest support for this organization that has served us so well. Yes on 6C, Yes on EPRD.”

Make it a Night to Remember!

Register now for the Halloween Sock Hop at The Wild Game Restaurant in Bergen Park Thursday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a cash bar and a variety of food items that may be ordered from the Wild Game menu. A $10 charge to be paid online when you register will cover the cost of a DJ and venue rental. You must be an EPC member to attend.

Music from the ’50s and ’60s will beckon you to the dance floor to compete for bragging rights and prizes. You are invited to dress up and boogie down, perhaps evoking the sock-hop era with poodle skirts and white sports coats with pink carnations. Whatever your groove, we want to see it.

For non-dancers, there will be plenty of space to socialize away from the music. EPC social director Cherie Peterson promises it won't be too loud!

Wulf Classes Filling Up

Fall classes for beginner and intermediate pickleball players at Wulf are filling up. Participants in Beginner classes will learn rules, shots and etiquette. Skills and Drills classes are for intermediate players looking to improve their game and work on shots and consistency. They are not meant for brand-new players.

Instructor Corinne Jackson runs the classes with help from a great group of local players. She said the three classes she has led so far were “super, super exciting” and that she would love to see beginners sign up this fall.

Only three sports remain in a couple of the classes, so spread the word to sign up now. No drop-ins allowed.

Let’s Win a Pickleball Facility for Evergreen

Pop star Katy Perry and her Firework Foundation have teamed up with The Dink and The Picklr to give away an entire pickleball facility to the city who proves they want it most. Plus, one lucky winner will also receive a lifetime supply of pickleball essentials.

The lack of courts is clearly one of pickleball's biggest issues. It's the key reason for headline after headline about wars between pickleballers and tennis players over lines on courts. Almost $1 billion in construction costs is reportedly needed to account for the surge in demand for courts.

Katy, a pickleball fan, has helped promote the giveaway so the winning community can benefit from all the sport has to offer. All it takes is a click to enter by filling out your name, city/state and email address. You’ll be among the first to receive updates and alerts about this opportunity, and you can increase your chances to win by engaging in specific social media activities.

We’ve got to be in it to win it, so enter now!
