Pickleball Tip of the Week from Hiwan Pickleball Pro Tom Karas: You can get away with a lot on the pickleball court.
If you are new to pickleball, you may find it hard to believe how much you can get away with on the court.
Sometimes the ball kind of clings to your paddle or bounces a little jig. That’s ok. The ball can be hit twice or be carried if it is unintentional and part of a continuous, single direction paddle motion by one player. You can’t get away with that in tennis.
Maybe you hit a low return shot, but it is so low that it hits the top of the net. If it lands on the other guy’s court before it hits anything else, it’s good. No penalty for you. If you hit the top of the net on your serve, it’s still good if it lands in the correct service court beyond the kitchen line.
You can start the service motion and stop before you complete it. Or you can swing and miss completely. No problem, just try again.
In pickleball, you are not only permitted but encouraged to hit the ball directly at your opponent at point blank range. You hit the other guy, he gets a fault against him, and you win the rally. But please, hit at the toes, not the nose.
If you are distracted by an errant ball, a spectator’s behavior, or another occurrence that adversely impacts play, you can call a hinder and replay the point. However, we have a lot going on in a small area and you need to learn to focus and block out the many distractions around.
Did you know that in pickleball if another player’s phone keeps ringing or pinging while you are in a game, you are permitted to grab it and smash it? Well, not really….lol! But it would be courteous if you would leave your phone on silent mode. (Reprinted with the permission of Beverly Keil)
There are also a few things you can’t get away with:
When serving, if you step over the baseline or outside the imaginary sideline that continues behind the baseline, it is considered a foot fault and you lose your serve.
If you hit the ball on a volley, you cannot be standing in the kitchen. When you return a shot while standing in the kitchen area, the ball must bounce. In addition, you cannot even step on the kitchen line when striking the ball on a volley or fall into the kitchen on your follow through.
You cannot hit the net with your paddle at any time.
It is considered good etiquette to call these errors on yourself if you are the only player that notices the violation.
