A Message from EPC's Past President
As the new year begins, it gives one an occasion to pause and reflect on the past. Ten years ago about twelve of us met for the first time with Ted Pritchett to learn about this new sport coming to the Wulf Recreation Center - pickleball. Just the name itself should have resulted in a "no show" situation, but no - ten years later over two hundred active individual participants struggle to find court time. WHO KNEW! Four years into the program Tom Karas and I thought that the sport had developed enough interest so that it required organization, direction and leadership. That was the birth of the board. As Tom declined to serve as the president, that left me "holding the bag". So that brings us to today and my having served two three-year terms as the president. Being retired certainly helped that happen.
It has been an amazing ride. To be part of a program that has grown and prospered with so many other pickleball programs across our country has been a real treat. What is really amazing is that over the six years of board service, I have not had one occasion when a participant has not agreed to help donate and lead. That is how we got where we are today. I have learned that pickleball players have an unusual commitment and generosity that is truly unique. These characteristics have resulted in the development of indoor courts at Wulf, expansion and improvements at Marshdale, the EMS improvements and so many other activities and programs which have enhanced the growth of pickleball in our mountain community. I sincerely thank all of you. Mentioning names would be dangerous and the list is very, very long and I would not want to forget anybody. I only wish the best and am confident that the new leadership will continue the growth and expansion of our sport. Our imagination and energy is the only limiting factor for a bright and exciting future. Thanks so much and don't forget - to pickle on and on.
Al Buenning, Past President
