Evergreen's First Pickleball Baby Due August 24

IMG_0964.jpeg

We hope you’ve met Allison and Peter Weber, two of our newer players. We couldn’t help but notice early on that Allison might be expecting. Soon enough, the baby bump was obvious and we asked Allison if she wouldn’t mind talking to us about playing pickleball while pregnant.

Thanks so much for agreeing to a story for our newsletter. We've never had a pickleball baby before so this is special for all of us.

I didn't realize I was the first!

Tell us about yourself and Peter.

Pete grew up in Golden. He went to Lakewood High School, and after a brief stint at Cal Lutheran, ended up graduating from Colorado State (Go Rams). He finished early so he could be a ski instructor at Keystone, and is still in the Ski Industry to this day. He owns an indoor ski business called Shredder where they teach kids and toddlers to ski on fake snow in warehouses close to home.
I grew up in North Carolina, studied Biblical Studies and Hebrew in Scotland at the University of St Andrews, but knew I wanted to head out West. I grew up spending summers on a dude ranch in Wyoming, and thought I would move out to Sheridan and marry a cowboy and buy some horses. Well, I followed a friend to Denver thinking it would only be a layover to Wyoming, but I met Pete and that was that.
We actually live in Idledale. (A few Pickleball Club members have been shocked. People actually live in Idledale?!) But I work in Evergreen with Berkshire Hathaway Elevated Living as a Realtor®. We were living in Golden near Pete's family, but even Golden felt like too big of a city. Sheridan was a little far, but Evergreen seemed like a great little mountain town for work, play, and escaping the city.

When is your baby due? Girl or boy, if you want to reveal?

Our Baby is due August 24th. We aren't finding out the sex of the baby this time around, though I've been guessing it's a boy ever since we found out. I tried to make the nursery gender neutral and ended up with a cowboy theme. I loved cowboys, so I figure a boy or girl will love cowboys?

Where did you pick up pickleball?

My mom introduced pickleball to our family last year in North Carolina. We were able to visit a few times even with COVID, and it became a game my family of 9 would play for hours via a cheap net and chalk outlines in the driveway. We weren't sure we had all the rules correct, and sure enough Pete and I had a few corrections to make as soon as we entered Wulf. (Thanks Jim and Monty for pointing out each of our blunders...)

What are the pros and cons of playing while pregnant?
Mostly I am grateful for it! I still feel like I'm able to compete despite being in my third trimester as the court is a small enough space. It is great exercise in little spurts instead of requiring a ton of endurance, which seems like a great fit for being pregnant. Not to give my opponents any pointers, but I have noticed I'm not quite pivoting or getting low balls the way I was several months ago. But I tell myself it means I'll be far better and a real surprise when I'm playing again in several months when not pregnant.

Anything else you want to add?

I want to thank everyone for being so welcoming to me and Pete. Everyone’s so excited for us about the baby; and for teaching so generously. I'm hoping to play as long as I can, and then hoping the baby and I can come and cheer Pete on!
