The Pickle Boat: More Odds & Ends

Taking the ball in the air is a “volley.”

Taking the ball in the air is a “volley.”

Is there a difference between “rally” and “volley”?
Many of us use the terms interchangeably. You might say after a hard-fought, protracted point: “Good volley!” But that would be incorrect, unless the ball never touched the ground. A rally is continuous play that occurs after the serve and before a fault. A volley is hit in the air, during a rally, before the ball has hit the ground. And that’s why the kitchen is called the No Volley Zone, not the No Rally Zone. Now you know.

Still Time to Sign Up for Dinkeroo
Registration for the Inaugural EPC Dinkeroo Tournament is still open. We can slot up to 64 players for the May 26 event at Marshdale. Make sure you’re a 2021 EPC member, then register here.

Reservations No Longer Required at Wulf Starting Monday, May 17
If you were trying to make reservations to play indoors at Wulf next week but found no times listed on SignUp Genius, that’s because reservations will no longer be required. Does that mean everyone who shows up gets to play no matter the number? Oddly, they’re still taking reservations for outdoor play at Marshdale and limiting sign-ups to 16 players. Go figure.

Is Calling a Ball “Out!” Before It Hits the Ground a Fault?
Seems we have some controversy over whether shouting “out”” before a ball hits the ground is allowed within the rules. It is. “Rule 6.F.4  Partner Communication. Before a ball bounces, any communication between partners regarding the ball possibly landing out is player communication, not a line call.” So go ahead and yell “out” or “bounce it” or “no” to alert your partner to the possibility that it’s out. It doesn’t make it so and doesn’t stop play.

Welcome New Players to Evergreen Pickleball
We have a lot of new players joining us lately. USA Pickleball reports that the sport grew 21% last year, thanks in part to the pandemic. People want to get out and play. What makes pickleball fun - and different than tennis - is that in pickleball, like Cheers, “everyone knows your name.” So introduce yourself to new players you haven’t met and welcome them to pickleball in Evergreen.
