Inquiring Minds Want to Know: What the Hell Does “Social” Mean, Anyway?"

While talking with players about upcoming schedule changes, it’s clear that Social is confusing. There’s actually a definition for it, both on the EPRD website (see second page of the schedule) and on our Skill Levels page.

Social - Novice to intermediate players looking for a fun, relaxed game.
Intermediate - Mid-level players looking to improve shot selection, game strategy and reduce unforced errors.

You may ask why differentiate social and intermediate players based on motives for playing. i.e., “looking for a fun, relaxed game” vs. “looking to improve shot selection” as opposed to skill level, e.g., Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced, which are easy to differentiate. Good question.

To clarify where Social came from, Sarah German gives us background: “From my days as ambassador, and through my teaching I’ve learned that most players do not like being labeled ‘Beginners’,” she says, “and most are not beginners for long. The Social/Intermediate group has been the one to absorb new players coming in. ‘Social’ has been in use for a long time.”

Nonetheless, EPRD staff have been requested to reset names and definitions of skill levels. It’s their call. We’ll let you know.

Linda Jacobsen Excited to Be Evergreen’s USA Pickleball Ambassador

Before she started playing pickleball, Linda was in corporate sales for 49 years (consumer products from Hanes Pantyhose to Savin Copiers to medical and technology). She ran a golf business for 15 years, then was sales rep for Club Glove to the PGA, LPGA and Champions Tours. She says she “happily” retired in 2015. We recently caught up with her on the courts to get to know her a little better.

EPC: Congratulations and welcome as Ambassador to Evergreen and the newest member of the EPC Board.
Linda: Thank you! I’m honored and excited to promote and support pickleball in Evergreen.

Linda Jacobsen, USA Pickleball Ambassador

EPC: As you’ve been playing with us less than a year, what should we know about you? What do you do when you’re not playing pickleball?
I grew up in Omaha. As an adult I’ve lived in Denver, Houston, back to Omaha; but I always knew I’d return to Colorado and live in the mountains. I’ve been in Evergreen since 1997. My interests include skiing, golf (she achieved a 3 handicap within 7 years of learning to play), hiking, gardening, road biking, cooking and wine. I am a Level 1 Sommelier.

EPC: Impressive. Why did you want to add USA Pickleball Ambassador for Evergreen to your many activities?
Pickleball and its players have changed my life. I want to give back to this sport and lifestyle that have given me so much. I’m relatively new to pickleball, so I wouldn’t have sought the Ambassador position, but when Kathy asked me and Sarah encouraged me, I was in.

EPC: What would you like to accomplish as Ambassador?
I would like to spread the pickleball love; encourage existing and potential players to adopt the game and lifestyle. Get people off the couch and onto the courts. Eventually, I’m very interested in making pickleball available to wheelchair-bound individuals.

EPC: What do you see as the biggest challenge or opportunity for pickleball in Evergreen?
I believe the biggest challenge is having enough courts: both indoor and out. Appropriating and keeping time for play, especially indoors, will be really tough very soon. Opportunities for Evergreen pickleball are many, including healthier, happier people; strengthening the feeling of community; and reaching out and giving to people in need.

EPC: What else should we know about you?
I love music 🎶. I’m a mother, a grandmother. I used to be an athlete (laughs.) I was a Sunday school teacher and principal. I love a good laugh and great friendships. I look forward to working with all y’all!

Ambassadors volunteer to promote pickleball and USA Pickleball in their local area, working with the community, clubs, and recreational facilities to build pickleball programs.

Give Linda a shout out next time you see her.
