Last Chance to Chime In on EPC's 2022 Survey

Now’s the time to give us your suggestions for making Evergreen pickleball better. We’re closing out the survey this weekend and want to make sure you get your shot at directing EPC’s efforts over the next couple years. Ten questions, 5 minutes. Don’t wait. Take it now.

EPRD Adds New Skills & Drills Class for November

Skills & Drills is back at Wulf Rec Center! After November’s Next Steps class sold out in less than 24 hours, Sarah German convinced EPRD to add two, one-hour sessions, Friday, Nov. 12 & 19 for intermediates. If you’ve been playing awhile and want to drill at dinking, third-shot drop, serving and add some game strategy, this is the class. Register here.

If you know a never-ever who would like to start playing pickleball, there’s still one spot left in the Beginner Class that starts this weekend. Or, they can sign up for the next two-session class that meets Nov. 13 & 20.

Oy Vey! EPRD Covid Guidance Changes Yet Again

EPRD’s latest Covid update: “Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) strongly recommends that all residents ages 2 and older, regardless of vaccination status, return to wearing a mask in indoor public spaces to minimize risk and maximize protection from COVID-19, including the highly infectious Delta variant.” So mask or no mask?

While we’re on the subject, we received a comment from one player via the EPC Survey that raises a good question: “Covid virus does not discriminate. Why is Vaxxed vs un-vaxxed a thing. Both can spread it and both can catch it. Rules are fairly silly. If the Vaccine worked it would stop the spread and stop those from catching the virus.” Okay, good points. So, how does the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention answers those questions?

Does the COVID-19 vaccine prevent transmission?
CDC: Evidence suggests the U.S. COVID-19 vaccination program has substantially reduced the burden of disease by preventing serious illness in fully vaccinated people and interrupting chains of transmission.

Can you get COVID-19 after being vaccinated?
CDC: Vaccinated people can still become infected and have the potential to spread the virus to others, although at much lower rates than unvaccinated people. The risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection in fully vaccinated people are higher where community transmission of the virus is widespread.

So no, vaccines don’t stop the virus in its tracks nor prevent those vaccinated from becoming infected. But vaccines substantially reduce the spread as well as the seriousness of the illness in those vaccinated in our pickleball community.

How Pickleball Won Over Everyone From Leonardo DiCaprio to Your Grandparents, According to Vanity Fair

USA Pickleball’s October Newsletter features a Vanity Fair story this month.

“Pickleball for ALL! Craig Coyne (actor, screenwriter, director and husband of Barbara Bush), shares his Hollywood Pickleball experiences in his recent article ‘How Pickleball Won Over Everyone From Leonardo DiCaprio to Your Grandparents.

“Noting that celebrities are eliminating vacation spots that don’t offer pickleball, and that having your own home court is the new Hollywood status symbol, Coyne showcases that pickleball is …’accessible, affordable and allows almost unparalleled competitive balance across generations and genders.”

While you might criticize Coyne’s lack of research on the origins of pickleball, you’ll smile at what we’ve known for some time that celebrities are only now discovering.
