Round Robin wants you (yes, you)

Two people canceled their registrations for the EPC Round Robin at Mount Vernon Canyon Club to be held on Saturday, June 8, dropping the field to 38. It is hoped at least two replacements will sign up by the deadline of noon tomorrow, Wednesday, June 5, bringing the tournament field to five groups of eight. Tournament director Mick Pearce has a backup plan that involves EPC board members filling in, so the show will go on regardless.

Only EPC members may register for the Round Robin. Click here to register and here to renew or start your EPC membership. Tournament cost is $25, membership is $20 per year.

After registration closes, the seeding committee will do its job—placing players in groups of eight by skill level.

Marshdale tennis/pickleball courts are really, truly not playable.

Marshdale is all torn up

Construction is under way on a $300,000 conversion of the existing tennis/pickleball courts at Marshdale to eight dedicated pickleball courts.

The existing slab will be resurfaced, the current exterior fencing will be replaced and a permanent 3.5-foot divider fence will run east to west with four courts on either side. The divider cannot be higher because new poles can’t be set into the concrete of the existing slab. Exterior fences will be 8 feet high with 7-foot windscreens.

Temporary fencing from north to south with four courts on either side will be given a trial run.

Concrete sidewalks will be laid around the courts, with a gravel walkway probable on the north side. There will be gates on all four sides.

The east and west sides of the courts will each have a concrete seating area of about 10 feet by 20 feet. EPC is raising funds for benches and possible shade structures. Click here to find out how you can contribute.

The fences were down and the surface was coming up today at Marshdale.

Evergreen Middle, Marshdale Elementary courts are getting there

Three courts at Evergreen Middle School are edging toward availability, maybe by Friday, June 7. Eager players like Al Buenning and Larry Flowers are keeping tabs on progress and sharing on EMS TeamReach. EPC President Bob Kerr reports that once painting of the courts is complete, and nets and windscreens are installed, they will be unlocked and remain unlocked for the summer. That’s good news.

Meanwhile, Bob successfully recruited volunteers to help with striping three to four courts at Marshdale Elementary Thursday, June 6. The courts will be on the north side of the school, with parking in a lot on the northeast side. The lot can be reached from Ocelot Trail, the road that separates the school and the under-construction Marshdale courts, or from the entrance road on the east side of the school.

Evergreen players shine at Apex tournament

The Evergreen pickleball community was represented in a truly memorable manner at the 2024 Apex Foundation Pickleball Tournament on Memorial Day weekend.

Gig Blitz, who sponsors the Spring Fling and two of our 2024 tournaments, and Jeff Dickenson won gold in the mixed 4.0 and 4.5 division. Corinne Jackson and Pat Bixenman were gold medalists in the mixed 3.0 division. Jeff Dickenson and John Funk won bronze medals in the men’s 4.0.

Those are some impressive results with 170 players participating in the competition at the Marquardt-Miles Outdoor Pickleball Courts in Arvada, an Apex Park and Recreation District facility.

From left, Corinne Jackson, Pat Bixenman, Gig Blitz and Jeff Dickenson are dazzling in their tournament gold.

Pickleball camp at Mount Vernon needs participation

The Laura Fenton Kovanda clinic at Mount Vernon Canyon Club is in danger of being canceled. At least eight of 40 available spots must be filled by tomorrow for the event to go on. Wednesday, June 5, is the deadline to register.

Grouper really wants to pay your dues

Grouper, which encourages engagement and activity among those with a qualifying Medicare Advantage or Supplement, plan, is evolving. Linda Jacobsen said it has changed quite a bit and will change again.

“They paid your $15 EPC club dues for 2024, because you were eligible and using the Activity Tracker; they want to pay you by check for next year’s dues, which are $20,” Linda said. “Due to the evolution you need to keep using the Activity Tracker and call a Grouper rep to verify your eligibility.”

To receive your $20 check (payment for next year’s dues), please call 833-906-1700. Tell the Grouper rep that you are a member of Evergreen Pickleball Club, give them your insurance membership ID number, name and mailing address; this is HIPAA protected and safe.

“I’ve heard a couple of our peeps actually received a check,” Linda said. “If you are one of them, no need to call.” At least one couple also has been called by a Grouper rep seeking mailing information so checks could be sent.

Next year Grouper will pay you $20 quarterly, so be a Groupee and enjoy their “Benefits with Friends” by being active…….physically, socially and emotionally.

If you’ve received this email and don’t know if you are eligible, call the number and become a Groupee.

EPC has received more than $2,500 in bonuses from Grouper, which was used for a $1,000 donation to EPRD to encourage passage of the bond measure that is paying for the Marshdale courts renovation, for the recent Mimosas and Holes event, to subsidize Snow Angels refreshments and for a few other items.
