Vote for Board of Directors at EPC General Membership Meeting Wednesday, Dec. 7
Four candidates are vying for three open seats on the EPC Board of Directors. All EPC members are encouraged to attend the annual meeting, Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 10 am in the Aspen room at Wulf Rec Center.
Bob Taber, EPC president, will recap 2022 accomplishments, membership, website performance, fundraising, and financials. He’ll also give us a sneak peek at 2023 proposed budget, tournaments, facilities improvements and a vision for the future of Marshdale courts.
All EPC members can vote for board of directors candidates, but only in person at the meeting per EPC bylaws. The four candidates seeking one of three open positions are Jeri Herskovits, incumbent and EPC Treasurer; John Russell, incumbent; Cherie Peterson and James Mosby.
We asked each candidate to tell us:
1. Why do you want to serve on the EPC Board?
2. What would you like to see EPC tackle in the next year or so.
3. About you: background, interests, family, qualifications.
Jeri Herskovits
Hello Fellow EPC Members:
As an interim board member, serving as Treasurer for the past year, I am proud to be able to throw my proverbial hat into the ring to run for a full-term board member position. Hopefully, again, appointed as Treasurer.
I was born and raised in the suburban Denver area. I have lived in Evergreen for 12 years. My professional expertise and experience over the last 40 years is in a variety of roles, including, but not limited to leadership, finance, operations, sales, marketing and engineering; primarily in the oil and gas industry.
As a sideline, I own and manage rental properties as well as remodeled and flipped homes. I have an Associates in Engineering Technology and a BA in Business and BS in Accounting. I am now retired but along with being interim Treasurer for EPC, golf, pickleball activities, hiking, traveling etc., I work part time as an accountant for a non-profit preschool/daycare in Evergreen... just to keep busy.
Having been asked by our current president what I think qualities would be for being a good board member, I believe one should:
Focus on Listening
Ask the “naïve” questions
Serve as a goodwill ambassador for the organization.
Working in the finance departments of the oil industry, I enjoyed creating and maintaining operating and management structures.
As EPC Treasurer, I tried to focus on what the board needed. I brought the books and records up to operating standards by recreating the available records from 2017 into a cohesive understanding from cash in/cash out to constructive financials and workable budgets. During my year on the EPC board, we as a team began to focus more on what EPC could do for our members, to improve our position with the recreation district, fairness in getting proper access to courts, search for and obtain more access to more courts, improvements on our outside courts.
We also focused more on spreading the word about our organization, volunteering with kids’ programs, assisting to better improve the organization of tournaments, as well as our fun socials on and off the courts. I have also had the pleasure of being part of assisting Sarah German in teaching classes for new players.
I am proud of the board members we currently have and regret seeing any of them go. However, I am positive future members will be just as dedicated.
If elected to the board, I would also like to continue to act as a trustee of the organization’s assets and exercise due diligence and oversight to ensure that the organization is well managed and that its financial situation remains sound.
Thank you for your consideration.
John Russell
Over the past years I’ve been critical of some Board actions. When a mid-term opening happened I threw my hat in the ring. Better to work inside than criticize from outside.
I’ve attended all the meeting and contributed, but my prior bad health prevented me physically from contributing to EPC events.
Health wise I’m better now. I want to continue to contribute as an EPC board member, not only on EPC direction but also physically on events.
My top priorities for the board to address are:
More indoor court time and additional courts for winter play
A simple communication tool to allow members to know when others are or plan to play,
(especially important for indoor play during the summer and outdoor play during the winter)
Qualifications for board:
Spent 44 years in IT, mostly in management and 15 years as a Software Auditor.
Prior board working experience include 5 years on a school board and 9 years on a planning board, including 7 years as chairperson.

Why I’m Running for an EPC Board Position
I see serving on the EPC Board as a way of giving back to our pickleball community after enjoying many rewarding years playing. In any organization, there often arises needs for a balanced viewpoint, forward-looking vision and good organization skills. These are things I can bring to the board.
Also, I can easily create brochures, posters, handouts, social networking and website pages for promotional purposes.
Activities I envision for the board in coming years
Keeping our increasing numbers unified and positive about our experience on the courts is certainly an on-going theme to be expanded. EPC has provided wonderful opportunities for us all to get to know one another better. Adding coaching sessions, additional drills and clinics could be a way to help us all improve our game.
We may need to enlist public support for new courts in our community. We could promote one-on-one discussions along with talks at community events.
Background and Qualifications
In my years working for IBM, I presented new concepts to large audiences in the corporate world, trained personnel on computers, conducted efficiency studies and assisted with sales.
Creating, working in and successfully running four healing arts centers also provided me experience in managing people. I often used a collaborative, decision-making model to empower others to work together as seamlessly as possible.
I believe I would bring a balanced, organized and visionary approach to the EPC Board for present and future endeavors.

Three years ago, my friend Jeff Freeman suggested I try playing pickleball stating it's a fun game, you will meet great people and it is great exercise. A year ago, I took him up on the offer and haven't looked back.
I have met awesome folks while playing a game that is always challenging and fun. I am able to play on a regular basis because I am retired and have the time.
I've lived in Evergreen since 1976. I'm married to my wife of 33 years.
Aside from playing pickleball, I enjoy hiking, biking and traveling.
I feel working with the Evergreen Pickleball Club board will give me an opportunity to work with others to find ways to improve various aspects of pickleball in our community now and with an eye on the future of our sport.
Thanks for the opportunity.
Holiday Gala Raises $1,270 for EChO Food Bank
Our caring, sharing members brought out good cheer and donations for a good cause last week at The Wild Game. EChO Food Bank can leverage our cash contribution to far greater benefit in the selection and volume of food and personal care items.
Jim Hunsaker manned the front desk and the “tip” jar. Jerry Beth Owen brought festive decorations and spectacularly wrapped prizes for the raffle.
Again, Sydney, a Hiwan pickleball player, was our bartender so she knows how to serve.

Two surprises at Marshdale today. First, school opening was delayed to 11 am due to the “massive” snowfall. A couple of us arrived in the middle of that cluster. Two, Mother Nature only graced us with 2-3” instead of 5-10”. Not complaining, just means the weather forecasters are still doing drugs.
Was lucky to have some of my old squad mates from last year. Bonnie, Claire, and Shirley are real troopers. Also glad to welcome John Hach and Maggie. It was a skeleton crew but we worked hard and cleared all 4 courts. They should all be good for tomorrow’s play except #1, still ice from the shade of the locker. May be some patches so I’d wait till after 10 to allow sun to melt ice and then it can be rolled away.
Just so you know, I’m keeping track of who shows and who doesn’t (the whole naughty and nice thing), and I will be passing that information along to Santa. So, if you don’t want no coal in your stocking…..
