The Pickleboat: End of August Odds & Ends
See Who’s Playing at EMS Public Courts
The North Evergreen Pickleball players have set up a Signup Genius for open play times at Evergreen Middle School. It’s not for reservations, but rather a signup so you can see who’s playing when. Open play is M-F 4-6 pm and Sat-Sun 8-10 am. Bring a chair, paddle and ball, and your best game. With a concrete surface, painted and taped courts, and portable nets EMS Courts are low-rent pickleball. You’ll love it.
Mind the Traffic Cones at Marshdale
Peter Mathis reports: “This morning when I pulled into the Marshdale parking lot, the school principal came up to me and asked if I’d tell the pickleball people to not move any of the cones that they put up around the lot, so the drop off of the kids stays organized and orderly. Seems someone moves them, especially on the far end of the lot where the parents make the turn. When they’re moved, they don’t have enough room to make the turn and they back up onto the road. This causes the sheriff to not be happy. As the principal said, since we’re coming there for exercise, we can walk a few extra feet to get to the courts. May help with our warmup.”

Did You Lose Your Glasses at Marshdale?
We discovered these in the lost & found bin. Wireframe glasses in a brown Polo case. Seeing how beat up the glass case is, we suspect you’ve had these for many years and we’re sure you miss them.
Finally, you’ve found your glasses and they’re not on top of your head.
Let us know they’re yours.
The Serve: Make Sure You’re Legal
We’re glad to see so many new players on the courts. In the beginning it can be a challenge to remember all the rules, but there’s one we’d like to point out because we’re seeing it abused too often: the serve. USA Pickleball Official Rules has three points about the serve.
Rule 4.A.3. The server’s arm must be moving in an upward arc at the time the ball is struck and may be made with either a forehand or backhand motion. (See Figure 4-3) Upward, not side arm.
Rule 4.A.4. The highest point of the paddle head must not be above the highest part of the wrist (where the wrist joint bends) when it strikes the ball. (See Fig 4-1 & 4-2) Just because your arm is down doesn’t mean it’s legal. It’s about the bend in the wrist.
Rule 4.A.5. Contact with the ball must not be made above the waist. (See Figures 4-1 & 4-3)
Of course if you want to forget all that, use the drop serve. No restrictions on how you can hit the ball when you drop it and hit it off the bounce.
