Friday Evening Play & Stay is a Lotta Fun

The first Friday Play & Stay at Marshdale was a fun date. People showed up 5-6:30 pm with their paddles and picnic baskets. After a few lively games, everyone retreated to the pavilion to feast. Absolutely no alcohol was consumed at this event. To attend this Friday’s social, make a reservation.

The Wild Game Adds a Pickleball Court

Conveniently located near the outdoor beer garden, one new court is open for play. It costs $40 an hour for as many players as you want. Sorta like Wulf on Sundays without the beer, or the $40. Call 720-630-8888 to make a reservation.

It’s True. Four Courts to be Painted on the Tennis Court at Marshdale

Your dues and other contributions have made it happen. EPRD has pledged to hire Renner Sports Surfaces to add the courts this summer if EPC, that’s you, would be willing to cover the cost - $1,600. The EPC Board unanimously approved the expense. We’re on Renner time - that means, when they can work it in, so we can’t tell you when.

Kendall Chase Makes US Olympic Rowing Team

You may remember Kendall playing at Wulf with her parents, Greg and Shauna in early 2020. She was on her way from Princeton, NJ, her home training base, to San Diego for some warm weather work outs. Then COVID. Long story short: she qualified in the Quadruple crew. Her US Olympic team will miss opening ceremonies as their first heat is the next day. There will be a watch party at the barn at The Woodcellar Friday, July 23. Check out the Olympic Schedule and set your remote to record all her races.

This Week’s Tip from Hiwan Pickleball Pro Tom Karas: To Lob or Not to Lob, That is the Question

In clinics we don’t talk a lot about the lob. That’s because it is a low percentage shot. When you lob three things can happen, and two of them bad. Lob too hard you’ll hit the ball out of bounds. Lob too low and any opponent over five feet tall can reach up and slam a winner back at your feet. Or you can lob successfully and force your opponent to run back to return the lob. The last one is difficult to execute successfully. The best time to lob is when your opponents are at the kitchen line, they are under five feet tall and they are hot, tired or can’t move quickly. The landing area is less than 15 feet behind them. If they are mid-court, the landing strip just shrunk to half that size. And, the higher your lob shot, the longer it takes to descend, giving a quick opponent more time to get to the baseline for a return.
If you still want to try a lob shot, do it from the kitchen line not the baseline. Open your paddle face in the same manner a wedge golf club has an open face. Move your paddle from low to high and extend your paddle after you connect with the ball for follow through. The open paddle face gets the ball up and the follow through helps control the landing.
